Up and Coming Destinations

Reykjavik is a vibrant ancient city with a full range of nightlife while being surrounded by an incredibly varied countryside.

Due to its unusual daylight patterns and location it is still an up and coming destination. In winter there is only a few hours of light (this though offers a great opportunity to see the Northern Lights) and in the summer the sun hardly sets.

The landscape is infectious; you can fill your days with glacier trekking, whale watching, climbing, and Viking festivals. For those that cannot sleep try a little midnight golf. Then relax and enjoy the peace and quiet by heading to the volcanic Westmann Islands.

The Islands do become hectic in August when the National Festival is held and thousands descend on the area for four days of big stage concerts, bonfires and fireworks. Try your hand at the ancient art of “Scaling” and watch the Puffin’s circle their precarious homes.

High season is Mid June to August, but avoid the crowds and see the Northern Lights by coming in between September and March and you will not be disappointed.

Baggage Tracking on Mobile Phones

Anyone worried about losing their luggage will soon be able to track its journey through a range of devices.

Travel IT firm Amadeus has teamed up with airline technology company SITA to start work on baggage tracking on mobile phones and social media.

Passengers will be able to track their luggage from check-in, to the moment it arrives on the conveyor belt at the other end.

The partnership was created in a bid to reduce the amount of baggage that gets lost or delayed during travel. In 2010, 29 million bags were delayed around the world.

The technology is already available to airlines and carriers, but will soon be launched in 54 airports around the world, giving passengers real-time information on the whereabouts of their belongings.

Airlines such as KLM and Qantas already give customers more control over their baggage with self drop schemes available in the airports.

A study conducted by JD Power found that 37% of travellers would use their mobile phones to receive real-time baggage updates if the technology was available.

One of the best deals in many cities is staying in private rooms at Hostels. Though spartan these rooms are often clean and functional. Bigger Hostels also offer family rooms which will be a hit with the Kids.

Look at Serviced Apartments as they are usually aimed at the business traveller. These are often a hidden bargain. Offering cooking and laundry facilities, and often access to a gym and pool for the price of a small hotel room.

Call a Hotel directly as they are often able to offer you an upgrade or complimentary services for the same rate as a booking service. Check online and then call and negotiate.

The bigger the Hotel the better the chances of a bargain in a quiet period. A weekend night at a large luxury hotel aimed at business travellers can often be surprisingly cheap as they have fewer business travellers to fill the rooms.

The Cathedral Choir is delighted and very thankful to Voyager Luggage New Zealand based in Bethlehem, Tauranga. The Cathedral Choir is on a mission travelling around, supporting and lifting earthquake affected areas of Christchurch through song; singing in the suburbs and other centres.

This busy assignment has required the need for suitcases to transport choir robes.

With funding tight, Voyager Luggage New Zealand came to the rescue generously donating much needed suitcases to the Choir.

The predicament?
A few airlines divide actual fares into a pseudo base fare and bogus fuel surcharges. Airlines often add extra charges as "fees and taxes" or "fuel and security" to total return trip fares. Actual fares on airlines can be the same but are often presented differently, some more honestly than others.

Why don't airlines legitimately raise total fares to cover increased fuel costs?

To scam you of "free" frequent flyer points.
To make fares look lower
To lower the fare basis on which commissions are paid.
To increase true fares on routes that regulated by other parties

The Solution:

Disregard fuel surcharges reports; only total fares are important.
Be careful when booking frequent flier award tickets that look too good to be true
